Painted in 1866, this cityscape shows a street in Pontoise, the Rue de l'Hermitage, lined with houses and with a man present in the scene. Camille Pissarro worked in oil on canvas, choosing an ordinary corner of town as his subject rather than anything grand. The picture invites you to slow down and look at how buildings, road and passer-by sit together. Pissarro is known as an Impressionist, and this work reflects his interest in everyday places.
On your wall: Its everyday street scene suits a study, hallway or living room, particularly where a calm, traditional view of town life would sit well among books or wooden furniture.

Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French painter, born on the island of Saint Thomas, who contributed to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. He learned from earlier masters such as Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. At 54 he took up the Neo-Impressionist style, studying and working alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.
