About this artwork

In May 1890 Van Gogh arrived in Auvers, a small town north of Paris, and rented a room at the inn run by Arthur Ravoux. This portrait shows Ravoux's daughter Adeline, who was 13 at the time. It was completed in the last months of the painter's life and is oil on fabric. Van Gogh said he did not want his portraits to look like photographs. He hoped instead to convey the impassioned side of modern life, using a modern taste for colour. Here, that aim shapes how a young sitter from his own surroundings is presented.

On your wall: A quiet portrait that suits a study, a sitting room or a hallway, where a human presence and a considered use of colour can be enjoyed up close.
