About this artwork

Painted in 1863, this landscape takes us into a Normandy farmyard. Monet includes a child and a peasant among the farm surroundings, and a broad-leaved tree adds shade and shape to the scene. It is worked in oil on canvas and now belongs to the Musée d'Orsay. It shows Monet turning to rural subjects early in his career, long before the Impressionist name existed. The everyday setting is observed plainly, which gives the picture a calm, lived-in feel.

On your wall: Its rural subject and rustic character suit a kitchen, dining room, hallway or country-style living space, where it brings a calm, grounded note.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
