About this artwork

Childe Hassam painted this oil on canvas in 1900, and it shows shipbuilding at Provincetown. A man is at work near a dock, set against stretches of sand and a broad sky. It is a genre scene, an everyday moment of labour rather than a grand occasion, treated in the manner of American Impressionism, the movement Hassam helped introduce to American collectors, dealers and museums. He was best known for his coastal and urban scenes, and this work belongs with the former. The original is held in the Birmingham Museum of Art.

On your wall: Its coastal subject and open sky suit a hallway, study or living room, especially where a calm, maritime note would sit well with natural materials.
