About this artwork

Monet painted this work in 1915, and its subject is the water lily, a plant he returned to in his landscape painting. It is made in oil paint on canvas and belongs to the Bavarian State Painting Collections, where it hangs in the Neue Pinakothek. Monet was the French painter who founded Impressionism, and he was devoted to expressing his perception of nature as he saw it. Here, that approach is turned towards a quiet scene of flowers on water.

On your wall: A calm, nature-led picture that suits a living room, study or bedroom, particularly where you want a soft, garden-inspired note on the wall.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
