Vincent van Gogh, 1890
Van Gogh turns the village church at Auvers-sur-Oise into a scene of bold, restless brushwork, with a woman on the grass beneath the sky.

Painted in June 1890, this is Vincent van Gogh's view of the church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Auvers-sur-Oise. The building stands at the heart of the picture, with a lawn in front, a woman in the scene and the sky above. It is oil on canvas, a landscape by a Dutch painter generally counted among the Post-Impressionists. His bold colour and expressive brushwork are the hallmarks of his work in these years. The painting now hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
On your wall: Its strong colour and village subject suit a living room, study or hallway, especially where a single expressive landscape can anchor the wall.

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western art. In little over a decade he produced around 2,100 works, including about 860 oil paintings, most of them in his final two years. He is known for landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in bold colour with expressive, energetic brushwork.
