About this artwork

Painted in 1883, this cityscape shows a view of Argenteuil, with a street and trees and a leisure-park setting suggested by the title's fête foraine, or funfair. Caillebotte worked in oil on canvas. He was a member and patron of the Impressionists, yet his manner of painting tended to be more realistic than that of many in the group. Here, that sense of observed, everyday life gives a familiar town scene a quiet, grounded presence.

On your wall: It suits a living room, hallway or study where a town scene with trees and a lively street adds a sense of everyday life.

About Gustave Caillebotte

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter and a member of the Impressionist group, though his style was more realistic than that of many of his peers. He took an early interest in photography as an art form. His family's wealth allowed him to support fellow Impressionists, and the collection of their works he bequeathed became central to the French Republic's holdings of Impressionism.
