About this artwork

Painted in 1893, this work takes yellow orchids as its subject, as its title tells us. Gustave Caillebotte belonged to the Impressionist circle, yet he often worked in a more realistic manner than many of his fellow members, and that sense of close, steady observation suits a study of flowers. He was also a generous patron of the group. The collection of their works that he bequeathed became the central collection of Impressionism for the French Republic.

On your wall: With its yellow flowers as the focus, it would brighten a living room, dining area, hallway or quiet study, and sits easily in calm, natural interiors.

About Gustave Caillebotte

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter and a member of the Impressionist group, though his style was more realistic than that of many of his peers. He took an early interest in photography as an art form. His family's wealth allowed him to support fellow Impressionists, and the collection of their works he bequeathed became central to the French Republic's holdings of Impressionism.
