Gustave Caillebotte, 1892
Three spiky red dahlias glow against dark green leaves in this close, vivid study of flowers by Gustave Caillebotte.

Painted in oil in 1892, this work shows three red cactus dahlias, their pointed petals radiating outwards, growing among dense, dark green foliage. The deep greens set off the strong red of the blooms and give the picture a rich, saturated feel. Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter who exhibited with the Impressionists and supported many of his fellow artists as a patron, though his own manner of painting was often more realistic than that of others in the group.
On your wall: The bold reds and deep greens suit a living room, dining room or hallway, and will sit well beside natural materials and warm, neutral walls.

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter and a member of the Impressionist group, though his style was more realistic than that of many of his peers. He took an early interest in photography as an art form. His family's wealth allowed him to support fellow Impressionists, and the collection of their works he bequeathed became central to the French Republic's holdings of Impressionism.
