About this artwork

Berthe Morisot painted her sister, Edma, seated on a shawl in a field, her eyes lowered to the pages of a book. A parasol and a fan lie discarded on the grass beside her. Her white dress takes on the light and shadow of the outdoor setting, and its delicate floral pattern echoes the wildflowers of the meadow. X-ray examination shows that Morisot changed Edma's eyes, which first looked straight out at the viewer, a manner more typical of Manet's figures. In the finished work the sitter is lost in her reading, much like Morisot's other women, who are usually absorbed in a task or in private thought.

On your wall: Its soft whites and meadow greens suit calm, light-filled spaces such as a reading corner, bedroom, living room or quiet study.
