About this artwork

Claude Monet painted this coastal scene in 1882, and its title points to the cliffs at Pourville and the shadows lying over the sea. It is worked in oil paint on canvas and belongs to the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Monet was a founder of Impressionism and was known for expressing his perceptions of nature, often through landscape painting out of doors. Here, the interest lies in the meeting of cliff, water and shifting shade.

On your wall: Its sea-and-cliff subject suits living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a calm, light-filled landscape would bring a sense of open air.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
