This oil painting shows Marie-Yolande de Fitz-James at the age of twelve, the daughter of Édouard de Fitz-James. Fantin-Latour painted a series of portraits of her family in preparation for a large group portrait, which was never completed. She wears a pink and white dress, identical to the one her elder sister, Françoise, wore for her own portrait. She has no jewellery, and her hair is styled simply, in keeping with what was thought suitable for a girl of her age at the time.
On your wall: Its soft pink and white tones and gentle, understated subject suit a bedroom, a hallway or a quiet reading corner.

Henri Fantin-Latour was a French painter and lithographer, known above all for his flower paintings. He also made group portraits of artists and writers from Parisian circles, bringing together friends and contemporaries in a single composition. His work shows a steady interest in quiet, carefully observed subjects, whether blooms or people.
