Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1890
A sunlit wood, a basket of apples and a small leaping dog: a gentle country moment painted with soft, flowing brushstrokes.

Here a young country girl offers apples to a seated woman, who the curator's account identifies as Renoir's wife, Aline. A boy in a straw hat sits nearby, and may be the artist's nephew, Edmond. A small dog leaps beside them, adding a touch of humour and movement to an otherwise tranquil scene. Soft, dappled sunlight falls across the figures, and fluid brushstrokes across the canvas draw them together. Painted in oil, the work was probably completed at Essoyes, in eastern France.
On your wall: Its soft light and relaxed rural scene suit living rooms, dining areas and quiet hallways, where it brings a calm, natural warmth.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leading French Impressionist. He is especially known for his depictions of feminine beauty, which have led some to see him as the last representative of a tradition running from Rubens to Watteau. His work carries that long lineage of European painting into the Impressionist movement.
