Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1905
A woman pauses to arrange her earring, painted with the weight and calm of Renoir's later years.

Painted in 1905 in oil, this work shows a woman arranging her earrings. By this stage Renoir had moved away from pure Impressionism towards a more classical manner, with strong, monumental figures that have real weight and volume. This picture is a fine example of that change in his late work. The figure may have been inspired by one of the women in Eugène Delacroix's Women of Algiers in their Apartment, which hangs in the Louvre in Paris. The work is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
On your wall: A quiet portrait of a figure at her toilette, it suits a bedroom, dressing room, or a calm sitting room or study where figurative work is welcome.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leading French Impressionist. He is especially known for his depictions of feminine beauty, which have led some to see him as the last representative of a tradition running from Rubens to Watteau. His work carries that long lineage of European painting into the Impressionist movement.
