The Czech title translates as "Shipwreck", and the painting places that drama on a seacoast under moonlight. It is a 19th-century work by Ivan Aivazovsky, who was born in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea and is regarded as one of the great masters of marine art. Aivazovsky worked in the Romantic tradition, and the sea was his central subject. This picture is now in the City Gallery of Prague.
On your wall: Its moonlit sea and coastline suit a study, library, living room or quiet hallway, where a dramatic maritime scene can set a calm, contemplative mood.
