This is Alphonse Mucha's allegory of poetry, in which the art is given human form. It is associated with his series The Arts, dated 1898, and it shows a woman with red hair, a feature that gives the image its warmth. Mucha was a Czech painter, illustrator and graphic artist who worked in Paris during the Art Nouveau period. He was known for stylised, decorative posters and panels, among them his theatrical posters for Sarah Bernhardt. Here, that decorative approach is turned to a quieter, more contemplative subject.
On your wall: Its decorative, allegorical subject suits a reading nook, study, bedroom or living room where a vintage-inspired look is welcome.
