About this artwork

This is Tafel 88 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, a plate devoted to Discomedusae, a group of jellyfish. Several white jellyfish are drawn against a green background, their rounded bells and trailing forms spread across the page. The image is a scan of the printed book page, so the headers and caption in the margins remain part of it. Haeckel was a German zoologist and marine biologist who also worked as an artist, and the plate reflects both sides of that work: scientific observation and a strong sense of design.

On your wall: The cool green and white palette suits calm spaces such as studies, bathrooms, hallways and reading corners, especially where natural history or botanical prints are already displayed.
