This is Nepenthes melamphora, a pitcher plant, drawn by Ernst Haeckel in 1904. It appears as plate 62 in his Kunstformen der Natur, the series in which he presented forms from the living world. The plate belongs to the Nepenthaceae, the pitcher plant family. The name in the title is also written Nepenthes gymnamphora, so you may meet either one in botanical references. Haeckel was a German zoologist and naturalist as well as an artist, and he described and named thousands of species. His training as a scientist shows in the attention given to the plant's form.
On your wall: Well suited to a study, a hallway or a sitting room where botanical subjects feel at home, particularly alongside other natural history prints.
