Kazimir Malevich, 1932
Five white houses with black roofs stand on a glowing orange-yellow ground beneath a deep blue sky, drawn with striking simplicity.

Malevich reduces a village scene to a few clear elements: five white houses topped with black roofs, set on a field of orange-yellow and placed beneath a deep blue sky. The forms are stylised and plain, and the strong blocks of colour give the landscape a calm, ordered feel. The artist's initials, K.M., appear in the lower right corner. Painted in 1932, it is a landscape, and it is held in the Russian Museum.
On your wall: The warm orange-yellow and deep blue suit a living room, study or hallway, especially where a clean, minimalist scheme could use one bold area of colour.

Kazimir Malevich was a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist. Through both his paintings and his writings, he helped shape the course of abstract painting in the twentieth century. He is best remembered as the founder of Suprematism, a radically non-objective approach to painting that he introduced in 1915.
