Kazimir Malevich, 1930
A lone figure in a green tunic runs past a red cross and small houses, beneath a blue sky and a field of stripes.

Kazimir Malevich painted this in 1930 in oil on canvas. A running peasant figure, dressed in a green tunic and white trousers, strides across the scene. Behind him stand a red cross and a few small houses, set against a clear blue sky above ground rendered in bands of colour. The shapes are simple and the palette is limited, so the figure's movement reads at once. Malevich is best known as the founder of Suprematism, though this work shows a human figure in a landscape. The original belongs to the Musée National d'Art Moderne at the Centre Georges Pompidou.
On your wall: Its blue, green and red against clean shapes suit a minimalist living room, study or hallway where a single bold picture can hold the wall.

Kazimir Malevich was a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist. Through both his paintings and his writings, he helped shape the course of abstract painting in the twentieth century. He is best remembered as the founder of Suprematism, a radically non-objective approach to painting that he introduced in 1915.
