This is a vertical abstract composition made up of rectangles and lines in red, black, yellow, blue and brown, set against an off-white ground. Malevich painted it in 1915–16, soon after he introduced Suprematism, the radically non-objective form of painting for which he is best known. The title, House under construction, suggests a structure being built up piece by piece, and the stacked, interlocking forms can be read in that spirit. The work is held in the National Gallery of Australia.
On your wall: Its pale ground and restrained blocks of colour suit clean, minimalist interiors such as living rooms, studies and hallways, where the strong shapes can stand out.

Kazimir Malevich was a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist. Through both his paintings and his writings, he helped shape the course of abstract painting in the twentieth century. He is best remembered as the founder of Suprematism, a radically non-objective approach to painting that he introduced in 1915.
