About this artwork

Henri Rousseau painted this landscape in 1911, taking the Seine at Suresnes as his subject. The river setting places it among his Paris-area views, and the Eiffel Tower is also associated with the work. Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist working in the Naïve manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job as a toll and tax collector. He began painting seriously in his early forties and left that work at 49 to paint full-time.

On your wall: A river landscape like this suits a living room, study or hallway, where a calm view of water and sky can add a sense of place.
