A quiet pastel by Odilon Redon, known by three titles, that turns a head of Christ into something closer to a vision than a portrait.

Evocation is a pastel by the French artist Odilon Redon, a Symbolist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. The work is also known as Head of Christ and as Inspiration from a Mosaic in Ravenna, titles that point to a sacred face and to the tradition of mosaic. It is undated and is held in a private collection. Pastel gives the surface a soft, powdery quality, and the work invites slow, close looking.
On your wall: Its contemplative subject and soft pastel handling suit a study, a quiet bedroom or a reading corner, where it can be viewed up close and without hurry.

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
