This painting is one of a pair of six-panel folding screens, made in Japan in the late 1500s, during the Momoyama period, in ink, colour and gold on paper. The scene moves through the seasons from right to left, beginning with plum blossom in early spring. Smaller birds are scattered throughout. Near the centre, three ducks swim between early summer irises and early autumn bellflowers. On the right, hawks harry a pheasant and an egret, while on the left a peacock and peahen appear to converse. Hawks were linked with military prowess, and peafowl with cultural prestige.
On your wall: Its gold ground and flowering plum and iris suit a calm living room, dining area or entrance hall, especially where the light is warm and the surroundings are simple.
