Painted in 1868, this coastal scene by Ivan Aivazovsky brings together two simple figures at the water's edge: an ox-drawn cart on the shore and a swimmer in the shallows. It belongs to his marine work, the subject for which he is best known. Aivazovsky was a Russian Romantic painter, born to Armenian parents in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea, where he spent much of his life. Here, the everyday meeting of land, animals, people and sea invites you to look slowly.
On your wall: Its shoreline subject suits a living room, hallway or study, particularly where you would like a calm, sea-minded picture to rest the eye.
