This is the cover of the first double issue, numbers 1–2, of Vesch – Objet – Gegenstand, published in Berlin in 1922. Its constructivist design is built from red and black, and the image shows the cover as a physical object, with the edges of the paper visible. El Lissitzky, a Russian and Soviet artist who worked as a painter, illustrator, designer, printmaker, photographer and architect, created it. He was an important figure of the avant-garde, and the cover reflects that spirit through its stark colour and structure.
On your wall: Its strong red and black suit studies, offices, hallways and modern living spaces, especially against plain white or pale grey walls.
