About this artwork

Piet Mondrian painted this work in 1929 in oil on canvas. It belongs to abstract art, and its title names the colours it is built from: red, blue, yellow and black. Mondrian began as a figurative painter and moved step by step towards abstraction, until his visual language was reduced to simple geometric elements. This composition comes from that mature approach, where colour and form are considered carefully and nothing is there for decoration alone.

On your wall: Its restrained palette of primary colours and black suits bright, uncluttered rooms such as living spaces, studies and hallways with plain walls and modern furnishings.
