This is Tree of Knowledge, No. 1, made by Hilma af Klint in 1915 using watercolour, gouache, graphite and ink on paper. The title points to a tree as its subject, a theme she approached through abstraction rather than literal depiction. Af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic, and her paintings are considered among the first major abstract works in Western art. Some of her pictures resemble diagrams, giving visual form to complex spiritual ideas. The original is held at Glenstone.
On your wall: Its abstract character and the fine, layered media suit a quiet study, a reading corner or a calm living room where there is time to look closely.

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings rank among the earliest major abstract works in Western art. Much of her output came before the first purely abstract pieces by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to The Five, a circle of women drawn to Theosophy, and her diagram-like paintings give visual form to complex spiritual ideas.
