Tree of Knowledge, No. 2 is a work on paper made in 1915, combining watercolour, gouache, graphite and ink. The title points to a tree as its subject, and af Klint's paintings often have a diagrammatic quality, giving visual form to complex spiritual ideas. She is regarded as one of the first major abstract artists in Western art history. This piece is now in the collection at Glenstone.
On your wall: Its abstract, diagram-like quality suits studies, living rooms and reading corners, where it can reward a slower look.

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings rank among the earliest major abstract works in Western art. Much of her output came before the first purely abstract pieces by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to The Five, a circle of women drawn to Theosophy, and her diagram-like paintings give visual form to complex spiritual ideas.
