Paul Klee made this landscape in 1931 in watercolour, with the pigment bound in egg, over a chalk ground on paper. The paper is mounted on card, and the work measures 21 by 33.5 centimetres. Its title, Landschaft B. L., points to a landscape, and Klee's signature sits at the upper left, though it is hard to read. Klee was born in Switzerland and worked as a German artist, drawing on expressionism, cubism and surrealism to build a style entirely his own. This small landscape shows how finely he could work on a modest scale.
On your wall: Its modest, abstract character suits a study, a reading corner, a hallway or a calm living room where a considered piece of modern art can be looked at closely.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
