Hiroshi Yoshida, 1929
A teahouse glowing with red and white lanterns on a rain-wet night, with figures beneath umbrellas and light shimmering on the street.

This Japanese woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida shows a teahouse at night. Red and white lanterns light the scene, and figures stand beneath umbrellas. The street is wet with rain, and reflections gleam across its surface. Yoshida is regarded as one of the great artists of the shin-hanga style and is especially noted for his landscape prints, so this nocturnal scene sits well within his body of work.
On your wall: Its warm lantern reds against the dark night tones suit a living room, study or quiet hallway where a calm, atmospheric picture is welcome.

He is counted, alongside Hasui Kawase, among the finest artists of the shin-hanga style, and is admired above all for his landscapes. He travelled widely, and became known for presenting subjects such as the Taj Mahal, the Swiss Alps and the Grand Canyon in traditional Japanese woodblock form.
