A narrow bridge spans a deep gorge, with the moon hanging far below it. Taito II uses that single detail to make the drop feel vertiginous.

Katsushika Taito II, who studied with Hokusai, made this colour woodblock print in the early 1830s, during Japan's Edo period. It shows the Monkey Bridge in Kai Province, west of Tokyo. By placing the moon beneath the slender bridge, he stresses how high the bridge sits above the gorge. Other impressions of the scene include a section with a poetic inscription styled to resemble a rubbing from a stone marker, of the kind often set up in scenic places. Ink was also applied differently from one impression to another, which gave each its own effects.
On your wall: Its dramatic landscape suits a study, hallway or living room where a quiet, contemplative view of nature would be welcome.
