This 1939 woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida takes bamboo as its subject, and chickens also appear in the scene. It was made in the Japanese woodblock tradition, in which an image is built up through carved blocks and printed colour. Yoshida is regarded as one of the leading artists of the shin-hanga style and is especially known for his landscape prints. This is a smaller, more intimate scene than the wide views he is often remembered for. A copy of the print is held in the San Diego Museum of Art.
On your wall: The bamboo and the gentle subject suit calm spaces such as a study, a hallway, a bedroom or a living room with natural materials.
