About this artwork

This colour woodblock print by Ohara Koson shows a green bird on a branch of pink blossom, turned to the right with its beak open as if mid-song. Behind it, the background is a warm orange that sets off both the bird and the flowers. The image is made with a black outline block and separate blocks of colour, printed on paper. Koson's name appears on the print itself. The image measures roughly 34.5 by 18.6 centimetres, a tall, narrow format that follows the line of the branch. The print is dated to the years between 1900 and 1936, and it was made in Japan.

On your wall: The orange ground and pink blossom bring warmth to a hallway, study or bedroom, and the narrow upright format suits a slim stretch of wall or a spot beside a window.
