Jan van Goyen, 1645
A broad river, a heavy sky and a ferry crossing the water: van Goyen's 1645 view of Emmerich captures the feel of weather and light.

Jan van Goyen painted this view of Emmerich, a German city on the Rhine, in 1645. In the foreground, a shallow boat carries passengers and horse-drawn wagons across the river. He often made sketching trips along the Rhine, and his paintings are known for their realistic impressions of weather, space and the shifting meeting of land, water, light and air. Here he worked in oil on wood, using swift, intuitive brushstrokes and a limited palette of grey, brown, cool blue and earthy green. The result looks simple at first, but it rewards a slower look at the sky and the water.
On your wall: Its soft greys, browns, cool blues and earthy greens suit calm living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where natural, muted tones are already at home.
