About this artwork

This colour lithograph is a poster for La Samaritaine, an Evangile en trois tableaux, with Sarah Bernhardt in the title role at the Théâtre de la Renaissance. Alphonse Mucha signed it in the lower right corner. It was printed by Champenois and made in two parts, which gives it a tall, narrow format of about 61 by 177 centimetres. Mucha, working in Paris during the Art Nouveau period, was widely known for his stylised, decorative theatrical posters, particularly those made for Bernhardt. This one has been recorded in several references on early posters and Belle Epoque posters.

On your wall: Its tall, slim shape suits a hallway, a landing or a narrow stretch of wall, and it would sit well in a living room or study with a vintage character.
