About this artwork

This plate shows a red climbing rose, titled Rosa Indica Sertulata and also captioned in French as Le Bengale à Bouquets. It belongs to Redouté's published series of roses, Les Roses, and the lettering credits both Redouté and the engraver Langlois. Redouté was a painter and botanist from the Austrian Netherlands, admired for his rose and lily studies and for flower pictures that were published as large coloured stipple engravings. The plate presents the rose as a botanical illustration, with the name set beneath the plant.

On your wall: Its red blooms and botanical character suit a study, dining room, hallway or bedroom, especially where a quiet touch of classic floral decoration is wanted.
