This is a photograph by Karl Blossfeldt, titled Ptelea trifoliata, the Latin name of a plant. It belongs to the body of work gathered under the title Urformen der Kunst, and a print of it is held in the Pinakothek der Moderne. Blossfeldt, a German photographer and sculptor, is best known for his close-up pictures of plants and other living things, published in 1929. Like his father, he was drawn to nature and to the ways in which plants grow. His work asks us to look closely at form.
On your wall: Its measured, botanical subject suits calm spaces such as a study, hallway, or bedroom, and sits well alongside simple, uncluttered furnishings.
