This is a botanical study in watercolour and ink on paper, made in the 1890s by the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint. Three orange-red poppy blooms open above leafy stems, with a single bud beside them. The paper has aged to a soft tone and carries a horizontal fold crease, which gives the sheet a quiet sense of having been handled and kept. The work is held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation. It was also shown in an exhibition on art and botany at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde.
On your wall: The warm orange-red against soft, aged paper tones suits calm living rooms, hallways, studies and bedrooms, particularly alongside natural materials and muted colours.

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings rank among the earliest major abstract works in Western art. Much of her output came before the first purely abstract pieces by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to The Five, a circle of women drawn to Theosophy, and her diagram-like paintings give visual form to complex spiritual ideas.
