This is a promotional poster for Maxim Bar, designed by Hans Rudi Erdt in 1907. Erdt was a German graphic designer and lithographer, and one of the most important figures in German poster art between 1906 and 1918. He worked at the Hollerbaum und Schmidt printing company and is associated with the Sachplakat movement. He has also been recognised for his inventive approach to typography in posters. Here, that background gives a helpful sense of the world this poster belongs to: early commercial design, made to catch the eye and advertise a place.
On your wall: A good fit for a home bar, dining room, study or hallway where a vintage advertising poster adds character.
