About this artwork

Forellenreigen, which translates roughly as a round dance of trout, shows a shoal of fish in brownish-purple swimming among stylised streaks of water and small bubbles. The image looks like a sample of woven decorative textile, and its repeating, flowing arrangement suits that idea. Koloman Moser made it in 1899, when he was an Austrian artist associated with the Vienna Secession and later co-founded the Wiener Werkstätte. It belongs to the Art Nouveau interest in fish and water as subjects, treated here with a graceful, decorative touch.

On your wall: Its muted purple-brown tones and calm, flowing pattern suit a study, hallway, dining room or bathroom, particularly in interiors with a vintage or Art Nouveau leaning.
