About this artwork

Koloman Moser designed this bookplate in 1905. It brings together a princess and a frog, a pairing that recalls the Frog Prince fairy tale. Water-lilies and carefully shaped lettering sit alongside the figures, in keeping with the decorative language of Art Nouveau. Bookplates, or ex libris, were small marks of ownership pasted inside books, and Moser gives this one the care of a finished design. Moser was a leading figure of the Vienna Secession and co-founded the Wiener Werkstätte, and his graphic work influenced much of what followed in the twentieth century.

On your wall: Its fairy-tale subject and decorative Art Nouveau lines suit a study, reading nook, or bookshelf corner, and would also bring quiet charm to a hallway or child's room.
