Vincent van Gogh, 1889
A golden field, a ploughman at work and windmills on distant hills, all set beneath a sky of streaked, swirling brushwork.

This oil landscape on canvas shows a ploughman working a golden field with a draught animal. Beyond the field, windmills stand on distant hills. The brushwork is lively and swirling, and the sky is streaked with long strokes that give the whole scene a sense of movement. Everyday farm labour and open countryside are the heart of the picture, painted in warm, glowing tones. Vincent van Gogh set the human figure and the mills within a wide, rolling view.
On your wall: Its warm golden tones and rural subject suit living rooms, dining areas, studies and hallways, especially where natural or earthy colours are already present.

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western art. In little over a decade he produced around 2,100 works, including about 860 oil paintings, most of them in his final two years. He is known for landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in bold colour with expressive, energetic brushwork.
