About this artwork

This colour woodblock print shows a white crane with spread, black-tipped wings perched on a pine branch. Behind it rises a large red sun, and below, a nest holds a small brood of chicks. The scene is framed by a brocade-patterned scroll border, which gives the whole composition the look of a hanging scroll. It was made in Japan during the Edo period, and the clear shapes of bird, branch and sun sit boldly against one another.

On your wall: The white bird, deep red sun and green pine suit calm living rooms, hallways and studies, especially where a touch of warm colour is welcome.

About Utagawa Hiroshige II

Utagawa Hiroshige II was a Japanese designer of ukiyo-e prints. He took on the name Hiroshige II after the death of his master, Hiroshige, in 1858, and he married the older artist's daughter. In 1865 he left Edo for Yokohama and began working as Kisai Risshō. His designs resemble his master's so closely that scholars have often confused the two.
