About this artwork

This colour woodblock print shows sail boats, as its title tells us, and comes from Japan's Edo period. It was made by Utagawa Hiroshige II, a designer of ukiyo-e, the 'pictures of the floating world' that flourished in that era. Hiroshige II took his name after the death of his master Hiroshige, whose daughter he married, and his work resembles his master's so closely that the two have often been confused. Woodblock printing builds an image from carved blocks inked in separate colours, which gives prints like this their crisp outlines and flat, clear areas of tone.

On your wall: A calm maritime subject that would sit well in a living room, study or hallway, particularly where you want a gentle touch of Japanese art.

About Utagawa Hiroshige II

Utagawa Hiroshige II was a Japanese designer of ukiyo-e prints. He took on the name Hiroshige II after the death of his master, Hiroshige, in 1858, and he married the older artist's daughter. In 1865 he left Edo for Yokohama and began working as Kisai Risshō. His designs resemble his master's so closely that scholars have often confused the two.
