About this artwork

Painted in 1872 by Claude Monet, Springtime, also known as The Reader, shows his first wife, Camille Doncieux, seated and reading beneath a canopy of lilacs. It is an oil painting on canvas, made in the Impressionist manner for which Monet is known. The subject is simple and domestic: a woman absorbed in a book, sheltered by blossom. The painting is now held by the Walters Art Museum.

On your wall: Its gentle garden subject and springlike mood suit living rooms, bedrooms, reading corners and studies where a calm, natural note is welcome.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
