About this artwork

Vincent van Gogh painted this landscape in oils on 4 July 1888, while he was living at Arles in France. It shows garrigue, the low, scrubby Mediterranean vegetation, with gnarled trees in the foreground and the ruins of Montmajour Abbey standing dark against the evening sky at upper left. The canvas measures 73.3 by 93.3 centimetres. For more than a century it belonged to a Norwegian industrialist's private collection, where it was wrongly believed to be a fake. It was later re-examined and authenticated as Van Gogh's work.

On your wall: Its sunset light and earthy, natural subject suit living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a landscape can bring a little warmth and depth to the walls.
