This plate shows Rosa turbinata, known in French as Rosier de Francfort, a red rose drawn with its buds and leaves on the stem. It belongs to Redouté's Les Roses, the celebrated series of rose studies. The lettering on the plate gives both the Latin and French names, and credits Redouté together with Rémond and Bessin. Redouté was a painter and botanist best known for his flower watercolours, many of which were published as large coloured stipple engravings. Here the flower is the clear focus, set out so that the bloom, buds and foliage can each be seen with care.
On your wall: Its red bloom and fine botanical detail suit a study, hallway, dining room or bedroom, particularly where a classic, quietly traditional look is wanted.
