Pastor Kohl is a portrait of a man, painted by Paul Klee in 1932. The title tells us who the sitter was, or at least how Klee chose to name him, and the work belongs to the artist's portrait paintings of that year. Klee was Swiss-born and German, and his style was distinctive. It drew on expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and you can look for traces of that mix in how a face is built from shape and line rather than simple likeness. It is a quietly intriguing picture to spend time with.
On your wall: A thoughtful portrait suited to a study, living room, hallway or library, where its modern, abstract character sits well with both contemporary and more traditional interiors.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
