This 1918 watercolour by Charles Demuth shows a male dancer in a black tuxedo, caught mid high-step in a spotlight. Behind him stands a chorus of women in red dresses, their colour set against his dark suit. The title places the scene in vaudeville, and the work is part of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's collection. Demuth was an American painter who specialised in watercolour, and the medium suits the quick, theatrical energy of the scene. He later developed the style known as Precisionism, though that is a wider part of his career than this single work.
On your wall: The strong reds and deep black suit a lively living room, a hallway or a study where you want a touch of theatre and movement.

Charles Henry Buckius Demuth was an American painter best known for his watercolours. Later in his career he turned to oils, and in them he helped shape the style called Precisionism. Amelia's customers who enjoy clean, carefully ordered pictures may find his approach worth exploring, and it rewards a closer look.
